The Lone Bison - Grasslands Renaissance - Rebekah Coen
Grasslands Renaissance (acrylic, original), Rebekah Coen
This piece holds the quiet weight of many hands. What you see now--a lone bison
decorated in gold leaf -is a layered work hiding a history that is invisible to the
passing eye.
Two years ago, I was invited to paint live during Morton County's wine walk, Rather
than create alone, I asked members of our community to join me. Strangers,
neighbors, and friends--each left their mark. Some used neons, others reached for
muted bronzes. Some confidently swiped the brush across the canvas while others
looked to me with uncertainty and a timid hand. Each color, each brushstroke, was
proof of their presence, of their story, and of their own unique mark in this life.
Now, those layers have since been buried beneath the surface, but they are not gone.
Like those brushstrokes, what someone carries with them might be held in grace,
but it doesn't mean that what is heavy and messy isn't still there.
This piece is for the parts of ourselves we cover up, refine, and worry over just to
make it through the world we know.
This sacred giant of the Cimarron has since become the final artwork before you
today-a symbol of strength forged from resilience, the animal itself having
recovered from the brink of hardship with the help of conservation efforts. Acrylic is
the artist's reminder that there is no choice (perfect, good, or not so good at all) that is too big to change into something else when you're ready. You just have to pick up the brush, however many hands it takes.

Long Day’s Light, 2025
Acrylic on Canvas
40 cm x 50 cm (16 in x 20 in)
I paint the beauty of the in-between—the hush between moments, the quiet that hums in light-filled spaces. My work is bold and painterly, with Fauvist-inspired colors that bring a sense of playfulness and vibrancy to both nature and the spaces we inhabit. Each canvas is a celebration of nature and the spaces we call our own, a reminder that wonder can live in both the grand sweep of a Kansas horizon and the smallest corner of an everyday scene.
Long Day’s Light carries the technicolor warmth of summer’s fading sun, the golden hush that follows a day of honest work, and the quiet satisfaction of a day’s work well done. It’s a reminder that beauty often hides in the stillness between moments.
